Top forestry and forest hydrology scientist sought for science team

The State of Oregon is seeking top scientists to serve on the Independent Multidisciplinary Science Team (IMST). The IMST was instituted in 1997 and serves as an impartial scientific review panel charged with advising the State of Oregon on matters of science related to fish recovery, water quality improvements, and enhancing watershed health within Oregon (Oregon Revised Statute 541.409). The IMST’s principal work is to  provide independent, scientific analysis, and evaluation of state actions and policies under the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds (Oregon Plan). The charge of the seven-member Team is to focus on science, maintain its independence, operate by consensus, and report its findings and conclusions in written reports and reviews.

Scientists serving on the IMST are recognized experts in areas related to fisheries, artificial fish propagation, stream ecology, forestry, rangeland science, watershed science, riparian ecology, or agricultural management. The candidates should be able to incorporate an understanding of landscape-level approaches to natural resource sciences and management. Members of the IMST are jointly appointed by Oregon’s Governor, Speaker of the House, and Senate President for 4-year terms. The members of the IMST are not chosen to represent a particular region, agency, commodity, special interest group, or political point of view.  Members on the IMST are scientists from universities, federal agencies, or the private sector and are expected to be able to discuss and advise the State of Oregon and its agencies on the best available science as it applies to natural resource management in Oregon. The IMST operates under applicable state public meeting and public records laws.

The State of Oregon is currently recruiting to fill a position with expertise in the field of Forestry and Forest Hydrology.  The current position expires November 30, 2007, and a replacement appointment will be made shortly thereafter.  Deadline for submitting an interest form is November 1, 2007.
