Oregonians Honored for Contributions to the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds

SALEM, Oregon - Citizens, landowners, public servants and members of conservation groups, tribes and local governments were honored in an event at the Oregon State Capitol Wednesday, May 18, for their work supporting the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds. The Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds is the state’s unprecedented effort to restore healthy watersheds, clean water and salmon to productive and sustainable levels in a manner that provides substantial environmental, cultural and economic benefits. The event, “Oregonians Working for Healthy Watersheds”, celebrated the achievements of more than 30 individuals and groups from across Oregon who have made exemplary efforts to preserve and protect natural resources through voluntary actions and cooperative efforts for the future of all Oregonians.
 
Included in the event were the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board Governor's Spirit of the Oregon Plan Leadership Awards for 2004. This award program was initiated in 2000 to recognize Oregonians who are leading the way to a future of healthier watersheds. Spirit of the Oregon Plan Award recipients for 2004 are:

Governor's Natural Resources Office Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds
Leadership Award

Jay W. Nicholas, OWEB's Science and Policy Advisor, was honored at the event with the Governor's Natural Resources Office Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds Leadership Award 2005. This award is presented to public servants whose extraordinary efforts and groundbreaking accomplishments further the Oregon Plan mission. Jay Nicholas and four other public servants were honored for demonstrating exceptional perseverance and ingenuity while working on the Coastal Coho Assessment, the in-depth evaluation of the biological status of coastal coho and actions under the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds to rebuild and conserve Oregon coho populations.
